Cheryl is an amazing host with an amazing listing. We had a great time and enjoyed the amenities, which were all clean and prepared for us. The resort passes were awesome to have as well - we enjoyed a round of golf at the nearby Bryce Resort.

The hot tub and fire pit made our stay very enjoyable. Plenty of space for two families to spread out. Hosts were responsive and helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Plenty of space for 2 families of 4 plus a dog! Linens were clean on beds and fresh towels! Used the projector and fire pit 3 nights which was special for our kids!

Cheryl's place was very clean and cozy. It was the perfect spot for our book club's reading retreat. Cheryl was very communicative and helpful - always responsive, patient, and thorough in her explanations.

We came as a family of 8, plus a dog, and had more than enough space for all of us to be comfortable. Between the hot tub, air hockey, grill, fully equipped kitchen, or board/family games that came with the house, we were never bored!
AlexandraColumbia, Maryland
The host was amazing and truly thought of everything. The area was beautiful and in a great location, and the place itself was clean, comfortable, and welcoming. Everything about the stay was genuinely 10/10.

Meet your host

Hi, I'm Cheryl. Andy and I host like we travel: with the whole family in mind.

I'm a digital marketer by trade and an adventurer at heart. My husband Andy and I have crossed the country twice, once towing our Airstream with our four kids in the back seat (yes, including over Tioga Pass).

We've explored Thailand, Laos, Paris, Alaska, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, St. John, Croatia, Montenegro, Spain and most of the United States. The places we remember best were the homes where someone had thought about the little things: good coffee in the morning, games for a rainy afternoon, a fire to end the day.

That's what we built at Bryce Resort. Each house is set up so families and friend groups can spend the day at Bryce Resort or Shenandoah National Park and come back to a hot tub, a movie under the stars and a game-room rematch. Message me any time. I usually reply within the hour and I'm happy to share my favorite local spots.

The Roaming Rooster FAQ

How many people does The Roaming Rooster sleep?

Up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms (2 kings, a queen, and a double plus single), with a pullout sofa in the game room and a twin roll-away in the office for flexibility. A crib is available.

How far is The Roaming Rooster from Bryce Resort?

About 2 miles, roughly a 5-minute drive to the ski slopes, golf course, bike park and Lake Laura at Bryce Resort in the Shenandoah Valley.

What do the 6 free Bryce Resort passes include?

Every booking at our homes includes 6 Bryce Resort passes that cover ski lift tickets, snow tubing and ice skating in winter, the mountain bike lift from spring to fall, golf green and cart fees, and Lake Laura beach access in spring and summer. That is worth about $600 per day for a group of six. The passes are waiting at the house when you arrive.

Are the Bryce Resort passes good all year?

Yes, but each activity follows its own season. Skiing, tubing and ice skating run in winter. Mountain biking runs spring through fall. Golf runs in the golf season. Lake Laura is open spring through summer and closes in early fall. Call Bryce Resort to confirm opening dates and conditions before your trip.

How far are the rentals from Shenandoah National Park?

About one hour. The closest park entrance is Thornton Gap on Skyline Drive, reached through New Market and Luray. Both homes are at Bryce Resort in the Shenandoah Valley, so you can ski, golf or bike at Bryce in the morning and be on Skyline Drive by lunch.

Where is Bryce Resort?

Bryce Resort is a four-season mountain resort in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, in the village of Basye in Shenandoah County. It is about 11 miles west of I-81 at Mount Jackson, about 2 hours from Washington, D.C., and about an hour from Shenandoah National Park. The Roaming Rooster is 2 miles from the resort and Majestic Moose Lodge is inside it.

How far is Bryce Resort from Washington, D.C.?

About 2 hours by car. Take I-66 west to I-81 south, exit at Mount Jackson (exit 273), and follow Route 263 west about 11 miles to Bryce Resort. Bryce Resort sits in the village of Basye in Shenandoah County, in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

Why should I book direct instead of on Airbnb or VRBO?

Booking direct through our secure Hospitable checkout means you skip the Airbnb or VRBO guest service fee, message your host directly, and still get the same Superhost home, professional cleaning and 6 free Bryce Resort passes.

Which home is right for my group?

The Roaming Rooster sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms, is pet-friendly, and has an outdoor movie screen, a game room with air hockey and foosball, a hot tub and a dedicated workspace. Majestic Moose Lodge sleeps 10, sits inside Bryce Resort, and adds a home theater with a 100-inch TV, a pool table, a 7-person hot tub and two fire pit areas. Larger groups can book both.

Are pets allowed?

Yes. Both homes welcome up to 2 dogs, up to 75 pounds each. The pet fee is $50 per pet, per night.

Do I need four-wheel drive in winter?

4WD or AWD is strongly recommended from late fall through early spring because the roads around Bryce Resort are steep mountain roads.

Is there a security deposit?

Local rules require a signed rental agreement, ID verification and a $1,000 security hold, which is a pending authorization rather than a charge. You can instead buy an optional, non-refundable damage waiver: $57 for stays up to 10 nights, plus $2 per night after that. We handle this through Happy Guest, a secure website with no app or account needed.

What time is check-in and checkout?

Check-in is at 4:00 PM and checkout is at 10:00 AM. Both homes have self check-in with a keypad or smart lock, and a short departure checklist keeps checkout easy.

Is firewood provided?

Firewood is not included, but it is sold at stores near Bryce Resort and along Route 263. Fires are allowed only in the outdoor fire pits.

Is there Wi-Fi? Can I work remotely?

Both homes have high-speed Wi-Fi and streaming. The Roaming Rooster also has a dedicated workspace with a monitor, laptop stand and USB-C/HDMI adapter.

How do I contact the host?

Message Cheryl any time through the secure booking page on each home's site. She usually replies within the hour, before and during your stay.
